European House Vukovar
The
first prehistoric inhabitants of Croatia did not live in modern cities, but
rather settled in low hills and luscious forests to the north of present-day
Zagreb. Since then, history has run its course and has left many marks on this
beautiful country, some wonderful and heroic, others rather gloomy and still too
painful to openly address.
Many years have gone by since the Croatian war has ended and a cease-fire was negotiated. Rebuilding the nation, and in particular Vukovar, has been a slow process, and only with our combined efforts can we accelerate the reconstruction of this once magnificent, city.
It is true! After all these years, many citizens are still deeply hurting physically and emotionally from the ruthless and destructive War of Independence. They may still be looking for missing loved ones, and are quite angry and disappointed for what happened to them, their families and friends, and their beloved city. What these citizens need is hope.
Cleaning up the ruins of a war takes a lot of hard work. Buildings can easily be reconstructed, but restoring faith and trust in mankind, after entire innocent communities were destroyed, takes a lot more effort. "Europski dom Vukovar – European House Vukovar“ is an organization that believes in the desire of the Croatian citizens to restore, not only Vukovar, but the reputation and greatness of the entire country. In unison, and with the support of European Community, this goal is definitely in our reach.

When Nations Work Together
The
devastating consequences of a war not only leave demolished homes, factories and
churches behind, but also many innocent
victims. Shattered lives, broken dreams and psychological and physical
injuries are difficult to mend, especially without comprehensive global
humanitarian involvement. This incorporates receiving support and assistance
from dedicated volunteers and generous benefactors, as well as the contributions
of many charitable organizations.
War victim assistance is associated with any kind of charitable aid which is provided to help restore the lives of war survivors, be it as physical and mental medical care, shelter, nutrition, clothing, or anything else victims of conflict may need to live acceptably.
Numerousnon-profit societies worldwide focus on collecting donation for war victims. These non-profit groups and committees engage in various activities to gather funds, food, clothing, tents and various other items and materials to help the many suffering from disaster and war. They tirelessly network and implement projects to raise valuable donations, and to keep the gruesome images alive of the barely remembered, women, men and children of conflict, whose tragic faith gets constantly overshadowed by newer and more sensational news stories.
The amount of charitable organizations in the world involved in assisting and aiding disaster and war victims, and raising awareness of the effects of war, is staggering. Not only do these groups follow their own agenda, but quite often work together to be even more effective in their work. Cooperatively, they are more powerful, even on an international level and therefore are able to establish more influential connections, which may be useful if they need to reach vulnerable civilians buried deep in an active and hostile conflict zone.
Charitable and human rights organizations can help locate displaced individuals and families, favorably negotiate during military hostage situations, document violations of international humanitarian law, defend human rights, and provide essential services and goods to victims suffering hardship because of armed conflict, or other disastrous circumstances beyond their control. These humanitarian organizations represent peace and understanding, traits we all should keep close to our heart.
European Health: How Healthy Are We?
Europeans
take their health very seriously. Few doubts remain to the priority of health
these days within the European Union.
Despite upward trends in health with the new 2007(-2013) European Health
Strategy, and a rise in life expectancy, the question still remains: How healthy
are we?
A main concern for European people and health surrounds an aging population.
This is two-fold in that the emerging European Health Strategy would like to see
the aging population work during their golden years.
When an aging population is healthy, it costs us less in terms of health care.
If an aging population is healthy to work late into their years, the economy
will be successful.
Less strain to the job market ultimately mirrors a successful economy. Unhealthy
people aren’t productive. This is the roadblock European people must overcome,
due to low birth rates coupled with an increasingly aging population.
The aged can also expect to live longer today than ever before. Yet, is living
longer truly resembling a better quality of health and life?
According to a cross-national analysis in 2005, it’s unclear whether the
increased life expectancy of Europeans across 25 countries of the European Union
is actually spent in health and vitality. Our quality of life and length of life
are not necessarily correlated (Jagger, The Lancet, Dec. 20th, 2008).
An aging population, with a long life expectancy but with poor quality of life,
is not conducive to the overall health of the parts or the whole. But do the
needs of the individual coexist with the needs of the overall European Union?
How healthy are we?
This is a very important question considering prior studies haven’t shown
‘career’ as one of the main indicators of a quality of life that the aged
considers essential to the personal meaning of their overall lives.
Relationships score high, but our careers do not ((Brim, University of Chicago
Press, 2004).
Perhaps the answers lie in what our definition of health is. European people and
health are essential to the future as the European Union seeks to answer these
questions.
